Starting from an etymological revision and an overview of the history of performance studies, I critique the use of representación and puesta en escena as substitutes for performance, since these terms assume a particular relation between reality and its signs, and hide the conceptual richness of the original word. I conclude with a series of reflections about the terms used in the context of popular theater in the northern part of Guerrero is different, given that these words accent the experimental aspects of memory and the transformation of the subject.
