Resumen

MERCADO ORDENES, Mercedes  y  FIGUEIREDO, Ana. Identity Constructions of Haitian Immigrants in Santiago de Chile from an Intersectional Perspective. Migr. Inter [online]. 2022, vol.13, rmiv1i12495.  Epub 17-Feb-2023. ISSN 2594-0279.  https://doi.org/10.33679/rmi.v1i1.2495.

The work presented focuses on the identity constructions of Haitian immigrants in Chile. We conducted a qualitative study based on in-depth semi-structured interviews that includes analyzing thematic and intersectional content to understand the identity constructions of the participants in their migratory trajectories from Haiti to Chile. We present results associated with work and social experiences of the participants, along with sex-gender and ethnic-racial orders, incorporating emergent differences axes, such as religion, nationality, social class, and immigrant status. We found that the articulation of dimensions of oppression in Chile configures an identity of worker- migrant-Haitian positioned as radical otherness, and incipient changes in sex-gender identities are reported, emerging from subalternate social positions and as adaptation strategies in an adverse context.
