VAZQUEZ GARCIA, Verónica; OJEDA GUTIERREZ, Dann y SOSA CAPISTRAN, Dulce María. Population Displacement because of Mining in Mazapil, Zacatecas. A Gender Analysis. Península [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.1, pp.35-59. Epub 23-Abr-2024. ISSN 1870-5766. https://doi.org/10.22201/cephcis.25942743e.2023.18.1.84256.
This article analyzes, from a gender perspective, the forced internal displacement (DIF, for its acronym in Spanish in this article) caused by the Peñasquito mine, located in northern Zacatecas. A distinction is made between physical DIF and in situ DIF, where it does not necessarily imply a change of residence, but cohabitation with mega-mining within a territory in a growing process of environmental degradation. To obtain the required information, in-depth interviews and an inquiry of residents living near the mine, were carried out. In this text, two relevant aspects become visible for a literature about the DIF: 1) due to mining, the DIF can be in situ (that is to say, slow, but inevitably physical because of the gradual deterioration of living conditions); and 2) the importance of women for community survival and defense of the territory, despite not having weight in the initial negotiations with the mining companies.
