This study explores the theoretical contributions of Cultural Semiotics for the understanding of memory as a semiotic-discursive process. This paper will argue that culture is a complex, dynamic and heterogeneous system in which memory plays a constitutive role. Identifies memory as one of the foundations of cultural production for its ability to preserve and create new cultural texts.

This work provides a guide for categorizing memory as a social practice and as such being susceptible to analysis using various methodological tools offered by Semiotics and Discourse Analysis. Memory should be analyzed considering its threefold nature: a cognitive process of meaning production or semiosis; a social praxis, and the result of those processes.
