Agriculture is considered the second area of application of nanotechnology, after energy applications. The projects being developed are based on «zero-waste agriculture». The major components that are added together in an optimal and controlled way are fertilizers, pesticides and water. Nanotechnology can be combined with conventional methods and constitute promising alternatives for remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals (via its removal or stabilization). For example, the use of particles of granular zero-valent iron (ZVI) and its agglomerated or stabilized nanoparticles (NPs) have been successful in reducing Cr (VI) to Cr (III) in field studies and laboratory. This work shows the potential applications of NPs in agriculture and the environment while providing examples of use in the detection of pollution, transformation of pollutants and soil remediation.
