Dimethyldichlorosilane (Me2SiCl2, DD), the main monomer in the industrial production of polysiloxanes is obtained by a gas-solid reaction between silicon and methyl chloride using copper as a catalyst as well as various promoters. This reaction has been named as the direct process since its discovery about fifthy years ago. We discuss results related to the important role of silicon activation on the direct reaction performance and the effect of several reaction promoters. A synergic effect is observed when zinc and tin are used and they have a strong influence in the reaction selectivity to DD. Reaction conditions to improve the reaction yield without effecting the selectivity are also discussed. The effect of temperature on the reaction selectivity is other important aspect considered in this study.
