GARZA AGUILAR, Sara Margarita; SANCHEZ CAMARGO, Víctor Allan; GODINEZ PALMA, Silvia Karina y LARA NUNEZ, Aurora. Avances recientes en el estudio del ciclo celular en plantas. Rev. educ. bioquím [online]. 2014, vol.33, n.2, pp.39-47. ISSN 1665-1995.
The cell cycle consists of four phases: G1, S, G2 and M, and has the purpose of generating genetically identical daughter cells. There are three major control points during the cell cycle, between G1/S, G2/M and in mitosis (metaphase/anaphase). On these checkpoints, protein families participate controlling the correct cell cycle progression. These include cyclins (CYC) of various types, being CYCDs the sensors of environmental and internal conditions of the cell (i.e., phythormones and nutrient status), cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and their inhibitors like KRP proteins, the E2F transcription factor group, the RBR family of proteins and PCNA, among others. Plant genomes encode larger cell cycle protein families than those found in mammals.
