CARBAJAL LOPEZ, David. Administration, corporations, and laymen: Archbishop Lorenzana and the confraternities of Mexico’s archbishopric, 1767-1769. Sig. his [online]. 2017, vol.19, n.37, pp.8-33. ISSN 1665-4420.
This article analyzes the mandates on confraternities from the pastoral visits of the Archbishop of Mexico, Francisco Antonio Lorenzana, through which it is possible to identify an implicit definition of confraternities that the prelate was trying to impose on the ones of his diocese. The fundamental points of this definition were administrative formality, the nature of corporations, and the composition by laymen. This article shows a poorly studied aspect of a prelate known for his regalism, and whose moderation, including a certain ambiguity in the distinction between the sacred and the profane, becomes noticeable.
