Resumen
GARCIA-MATA, Osvaldo y CELIS-MOSCOSO, Igor. Financial capabilities as determinants of food literacy among college students. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2021, vol.31, n.57, e211118. Epub 21-Mar-2022. ISSN 2395-9169. https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v31i57.1118.
Objective:
Analyze the relationship between food literacy and financial capabilities among university students from Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Methodology:
We used a method based on principal component analysis, confirmatory factor analysis with structural equations, and multiple linear regression models.
Results:
Our results confirm that financial behavior and selfconfidence in managing personal finances are directly related to food literacy. Similarly, students’ self-perception about nutrition habits and the importance of a healthy diet are related to food literacy.
Limitations:
The unfeasibility of extrapolating its results to groups not represented in the sample and the lack of data to analyze the effectiveness of food literacy in the mid- and long-term.
Conclusions:
Our findings can be applied to policies that promote financial education and food literacy focused on improving young people's general well-being.
