DURANTE MONTIEL, Mª B. Irene et al. Competences in teaching: from student to physician. Rev. Fac. Med. (Méx.) [online]. 2011, vol.54, n.6, pp.42-50. ISSN 2448-4865.

Training a doctor is complex process where biomedical, sociomedical and humanistic knowledge is applied to clinical practice in order to solve health problems at an individual and collective level. The challenge in competency based education is teaching students to comprehend the interaction between the biology of the disease and the social context of the ailment; individual healthcare and public health; human communication, technology and medical science and, clinical and community medicine. The Faculty of Medicine's 2010 Curriculum defines competency as the combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and aptitudes that once interrelated allow efficient state of the art proffessional performance. Competencies not only require knowledge and techniques, but ethical commitment and values to achieve competent performance. As such, the educational process is best served by teamwork and collaboration of teachers, compliance with the academic program, proactive role of students and the development of integrated assessment systems. Competencies achieve coherence and congruency when both teacher and student understand and use them in the learning process.
