In this essay, the author examines the Agreement for Strengthening the Economic Association between Mexico and Japan. This Agreement is an alternative for the commercial relations of Mexico, which have traditionally been focused towards the US and Europe. The Agreement opens up opportunities of increased trade with Asian countries, through a closer relation with Japan, mainly after the financial crisis that affected that nation in 1997. In this essay, the author analyzes the content of said Agreement, putting special emphasis on the rules related to dispute resolution. Finally, it must be mentioned that the Agreement still is waiting for approval ofthe Mexican Senate.
