One of the regions most affected by transnational organized crime has been Central America’s “Northern Triangle”, in great part due to its institutional weakness. A comparative analysis of the characteristics and inner workings of Central America’s International Commissions and Support Missions can prove that they were created with specific mandates to board corruption and therefore are a lot more successful in their duties of investigating and prosecuting those responsible than international, regional or hybrid criminal law tribunals. They further provide multidimensional strategies to board the issue. Furthermore, these Commissions and Support Missions interact tightly with affected people and often engage in discourse with civil society, treating public opinion as an ally in its fight against corruption. However, they are also strongly dependent on political support from the international community and are operatively subjected to the whim of the governments in Host states, two things which constitute substantial disadvantages for the use of these figures as tools in the fight against corruption.
