HERNANDEZ RODRIGUEZ, Rogelio. Presidential authoritarianism in Mexico. Between tradition and necessity. Foro int [online]. 2023, vol.63, n.1, pp.5-40.  Epub 17-Mar-2023. ISSN 0185-013X.  https://doi.org/10.24201/fi.v62i3.2923.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has built a government that looks back to Mexico’s revolutionary origins to resolve social problems. Its social policy has been based on the institutional, and sometimes legal, dismantling of the political and governmental system, not for the first time in the nation’s history. Prior to him, Luis Echeverría and Carlos Salinas pursued similar policies. This article proposes that it is not about personal voluntarism, but a historical tradition and necessity: the construction of a central authority who resolves problems and the recurrent failings in the economic programs that deepen social imbalances.

Palavras-chave : presidentialism; authoritarianism; political voluntarism; Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
