There are about 200 native villages within the Federal District of Mexico, each with its own social and religious life which differs from the other boroughs and housing projects of the city. Here their community life is produced and reproduced. This article is based on extensive fieldwork in a native village: San Lorenzo Acopilco. The author claims that many of the community activities play a key role in the social life of the inhabitants and form an integral part of community institutions. The text shows how the use of ritual language serves as a model for practices based on political clientelism and explores the benefits this provides, such as legitimacy and authority.
