Studies of Latin American art began in Spain in 1926 with the establishment of the chair in "Hispanic Colonial Art" at the University of Seville. The man appointed to occupy it was Professor Diego Angulo, who became the promoter of such studies throughout Spain. While Angulo pioneered colonial art studies as a discipline in that country, his pupil and collaborator Enrique Marco was the first to devote his whole academic career to its research and dissemination. This article explores the origins of these vocations and their first contributions to this branch of art history. The author had the honor to study alongside Marco, and after his death continued to enjoy the support and advice of the "illustrious professor" who, even at an advanced age, continued to take a keen interest in these studies.
