The article presents the results of research aimed at characterizing the relationship between regional politicians, parties and criminal organizations in Colombia. The analysis draws on the concept ofcriminal governanceand an approach that associates it with political factors. A methodological strategy based on QCA (Qualitative Comparative Analysis) is adopted and the respective empirical evidence is presented. It is an innovative work in Colombia that allows for differentiating types of public management according to the effect of illegal organizations, in this case the paramilitary groups that interacted with partisan parties and factions and local power structures. Findings include the characterizations of this type of management, the explanation of the factors that made it possible and the effects they produced on local democracy.
