Medical institutions in New Spain were consolidated between 1553 and 1646. Based on documents of the section Universidad of the Archivo General de la Nación (Mexico) the present article explains how this institutional process had an impact on the community of medical students. It also gives details about why is not possible to make a reliable calculation of the student medical population during that period.
