SANTIAGO CORTEZ, Felipe. The Congregation between Towns? A Historical Problem between Ocoyoacac, Tepexoyuca, and Cuapanoaya, at the East of the Toluca Valley. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2023, n.69, pp.5-39. Epub 27-Fev-2024. ISSN 2448-6922. https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24486922e.2023.69.77761.
This paper aims to analyse the congregational process of three indigenous towns in the Toluca Valley, whose histories have intertwined throughout centuries. The proposed hypothesis is that the model of reduction policy for these towns differs from the one proposed by the Crown, as these were not subjects moving back to their ancestral seat; on the contrary, they remained towns (altepeme) with lands, governors, and patron saints of their own. This reduction policy resulted in a sequence of events related to land tenure, specifically to the defence of the land. As an example of this, I draw attention to a problem, between the towns of Tepexoyuca and Acazulco, which resulted of their congregation and is still ongoing.
