GARZA CAMINO, Mercedes de la. Palenque como imago mundi y la presencia en ella de itzamná. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2007, vol.30, pp.15-36. ISSN 0185-2574.

This paper highlights the cosmological symbolism of some buildings and plastic images in the city of Palenque with the objective of understanding the presence in this place of Itzamná, celestial and creator deity of the Maya. This deity is represented as a two headed Celestial Dragon and as a dragon with a Skyband body in the tombstone of K'inich Janahb' Pakal and in the tablet of the Temple of the Cross, dedicated to god GI, a member of the Palenque Triad. The inscriptions found in this tablet tell the story of the present world. The name Itzamná, also in close relationship with GI, and as a creator god, is mentioned in the inscriptions at Temple XIX, dealing also with the origin of the world. This confirms the identification of the deity with the Celestial Dragon.
