This work deals with several aspects of the foundation and the first years of one of the higher education institutions dedicated to the students' artistic training, the Nacional Music School of the UNAM. The movement towards university autonomy (1929) and the struggle of a group of students and teachers belonging to the National Music Conservatory to preserve their condition of university members and to resist to be reincorporated to the Secretary of Public Education (Secretaría de Educación Pública) are stories that share, on their own way, the legitimacy crisis of the UNAM and its efforts to overcome the obstacles, making possible to project academic programs with a great social scope.
