FUENTES MONSALVES, Liliana Inés. Diagnosis of reading comprehension abilities in primary education in Villarrica and Loncoche, Chile. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2009, vol.31, n.125, pp.23-37. ISSN 0185-2698.
This article presents the results of a research carried out to assess the reading comprehension abilities of children enrolled in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade of primary education using the CLIP_v5 exam. The reason the author decided to carry out this research was the need to analyze in-depth why the children of fourth grade assessed in the national test SIMCE (Sistema de Medición de la Calidad de la Educación; Quality of Education Measuring System) had achieved such bad results in reading comprehension, actually the worst results of Chile. The theoretical basis of both the research and the test formulating is based on a cognitive view of comprehension, with a strong emphasis on the construction-integration model established by Walter Kintsch. The sample was made up of 2 277 pupils of the Villarrica and Loncoche town councils located in Chile's 9th Region. The test basically corroborates the low results at national level, with comprehension levels that do not exceed 50 per cent for superficial understanding and 20 per cent for in-depth comprehension. Together with those detailed results the study also offered a deeper understanding about the poor abilities, so a further research expects to propose remedial strategies together with the teachers who work in that area.
