This article explains the circumstances in which took place the training of sanitarian nurses at the School of Public Health of Mexico from its beginning in the early 20th Century to the end of the first decade of the 21th Century. The frame for the analysis were the different periods of the health-illness process, which means: sanitarian or pre-microbial, micro-biologist, epidemiology and health systems and new public health, and also the presidential governments to which the authors refer through some events that were transcendental for the population's health and for the development of the National Health System. They point out the milestones of the origin and development of public health nursing and, at the same time, they document the participation of the National School o Public Health in the country's achievements during the last century. Finally they raise the challenges that the programs of nursing in public health will soon face in order to improve the health conditions of the Mexican population.
