GOMEZ CAMACHO, Alejandro e GOMEZ DEL CASTILLO, María Teresa. Spelling and text messages among university students. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2015, vol.37, n.150, pp.91-104. ISSN 0185-2698.
This study aims to determine if there is a relationship between spelling errors and text messaging. This experimental work employs a predominantly qualitative model. The study was carried out with 42 students from the second year of the Masters in Primary Education at the University of Seville who wrote an academic essay and literally transcribed messages sent using WhatsApp. Content analysis revealed that together with the predictable features of spontaneity and orality, smartphones have favored the multimedia character of messages. The appearance of new spelling norms for Spanish described in this study, and the lack of negative impact on academic spelling, clearly indicate that critical reflection on this kind of texts should be incorporated into the goals of the new curricula for language in secondary education, and to digital literacy processes.
