The Biblical exegetical tradition had a definite influence during the Spanish Baroque. Nevertheless, when a poet indulged in biblical exegesis he tried to "play it safe" by adding a variety of more or less explicit disclaimers. In El cetro de José, for example, sor Juana makes the Devil responsible for all the exegetical content of the auto, thus making this character, to some extent, her alter ego.
