ALVAREZ ROMERO, Pablo Israel et al. Current Status of Peronospora sparsa, Causal Agent of Downy Mildew on Rose (Rosa sp.). Rev. mex. fitopatol [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.2, pp.113-125. ISSN 2007-8080.

Rose (Rosa sp.) is an important ornamental crop in Mexico. It is affected by a complex of plant diseases. Downy mildew caused by the Chromista Peronospora sparsa is one of the most important pathogens that influence the productivity, quality, marketing and production costs. Losses reach up to 100 % of the flowering stems. The main fungicides used to control downy mildew are: fosetil-Al, dimethomorph, cymoxanil and metalaxyl. However, new options for controlling plant diseases such as phosphites, are currently available. Recent trials have shown the potential of these compounds, to control diseases and to induce defense responses to pathogens such as P. sparsa in blackberry and rose crops. Currently, we do not have enough knowledge of aspects of the epidemiology of P. sparsa and infection processes, but they are needed to guide future efforts to develop integrated management alternatives of the disease. In this review we have examined and analyzed the main information currently available on downy mildew of rose crop.
