AVILA AVILA, Víctor Manuel  e  LOPEZ RIDAURA, Cecilia. The Concept of Idolatry in the Archbishopric of Mexico. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2020, vol.41, n.164, pp.45-67.  Epub 11-Out-2021. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v41i164.747.

Idolatry as a juridical, theological, philosophical, and canonical concept strongly influenced the development of the legal personality of the Indian in America. Idolatry is a polysemic concept with meanings contingent upon the time and purpose of analyses, and the approach adopted. Setting out from the Old Testament vision, this study traces the history of the category of idolatry and the controversies involved in its development, seen through the eyes of the authors who examined it and the process that produced the concept the Catholic church applied, beginning in the 16th century with the establishment of the archbishopric of Mexico, through the early 17th century in the years following the Third Mexican Provincial Council of 1585.
