MORALES CARBAJAL, Claudia. The conquest of a utopia: the Concheros dancers and their aesthetic search. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.43, n.172, pp.140-163.  Epub 11-Ago-2023. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v43i172.972.

This paper shows the utopian vocation of the Concheros dancers, as well as the role of aesthetics as the distinctive strategy of persuasion and transmission of its proposal. Special emphasis is placed on the renewal and adaptation of its discourse and on the dystopian responses it generates. The Concheros belong to a nativist current that’s been called the Mexicanness movement. In this cult, dance, along with other ritual practices, constitutes the means to transmit and update its philosophical and ideological principles. Its followers consider the Mesoamerican past as a source of wisdom and the reworking of Mesoamerican knowledge and philosophies as an alternative to Western values and ways of life. The text exposes some of the transformations that this movement had and how these have been reflected in the choice of new utopian and aesthetic horizons. In these multiple paths, utopian ideals have also faced their dystopian and contradictory counterpart, which breaks the ideal and makes the search continue. It shows, with a case study, the arrival of two Concheros dance groups in the Nahua region of the Sierra de Zongolica (Veracruz) and how they inserted themselves in the communities and dystopias, as well as the new paths that opened.
