Where, when, and how was “malinchismo” born? This has been a recurring problem since the noun and its adjective “malinchista” appeared in the country in 1938 to disqualify Mexicans who prefer the foreign over the national. Our objective in this article, supported by Burke's (2006, pp. 35-38) assumptions about the transit of words, is to follow its trajectory through 54 entries in 15 Mexican newspapers, from the 19th century and three decades of the 20th, and obtain a sampling of its semantic variations, its reception, and the ideological and political uses to which it has obeyed. As a “sequel”, we refer to the stigma that has marked Malinche, the character on whom she is inspired, as a “titular” traitor of Mexico's history.
