CARREON BLAINE, Emilie Ana. From Rubber to Asphalt in Mexica Plastic Arts. A Historiographical Review. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2016, n.70, pp.9-44. ISSN 2007-2392.

The paper presents a comparative study of the materiality of two substances: olli-rubber and chapopotli-asphalt, and analyzes the way in which some of their characteristics were exploited by the Nahuas in certain artistic, ritual, practical or medicinal applications, in order to understand better their symbolic value and presence in the shaping of the art of the Mexica Templo Mayor. The peculiarities, similarities and differences in the use of each of the two materials are clarified and it is shown that they were not equivalent, but analogous, which explains why one material could replace the other in certain activities.

Palavras-chave : Rubber; asphalt; Mexica plastic arts; historiography; Templo Mayor.
