The main objective of this study is to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of small cocoa producers of two cooperative organizations: Ríos de Agua Viva and La Campesina, located in the municipalities of Rancho Grande and Matiguás, Department of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. A probabilistic analysis was carried out using chi-square tests between the variants with the highest correlation, and the results showed that cocoa is a complementary activity, providing less than half of the total income; access to credit and the production of other crops are closely related to strengthening the diversification of cocoa production; most producers are men over 35 years of age, who control and make decisions on the use of resources from cocoa production. These data seek to contribute to the design of strategies for the development and improvement of cocoa production in the territories studied.
