MARI, Oscar Ernesto. The Limits of the State in the Colonization of an Argentinean Territorial Sphere. The Case of Chaco during the Reconversion of the 1920s and 1930s. Secuencia [online]. 2009, n.74, pp.53-79. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i74.1076.

In 1884, the peripheral regions of Argentina that did not come under the jurisdiction of former provinces were institutionally organized as National Territories. These immense spaces, which occupied nearly two thirds of the country, were under the state's protection, with a political and administrative structure that was almost entirely dependent on central authorities. The idea was to effectively incorpórate these regions into national life by encouraging colonization while consolidating the borders. In the specific case of Chaco, located in the north of the country, the process acquired particular features as a result of changes in the economic cycles. Part of the resulting problem, such as, for example, social conflicts in production spheres and the state's limited ability to exert proper control, are analyzed in this article.

Palavras-chave : Colonization; rural conflicts; Chaco; Argentina.
