ZAPIOLA, María Carolina. Reform Spaces for Children. Imagining Marcos Paz’s Children’s Colony (Buenos Aires, Early 20th Century). Secuencia [online]. 2018, n.spe, pp.15-52. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i0.1657.
The purpose of this article is to explore the reflections of Argentinean officials and professionals concerned with the issue of minority on the importance of the spatial dimension in the reeducation of minors during the first decade of the 20th century. To this end, we analyzed the plans for the establishment of Marcos Paz’ Male Minors’ Colony, focusing on how it was conceived in spatial and architectural terms. We can infer from this that the Argentinean projects for the creation of institutions for minors, inspired by 19th-century European proposals, were shot through with a systematic reflection on the importance of natural and architectural space in the reform of children and youth. This is the first historiographical approach that explores penitentiary systems for children and young people, and one of the few focused on the role of spaces in the design of reform schools.
