ESPINOSA-CALDERON, A et al. Dettaseling and leaves removal on an androsterile and fertile maize hybrid. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2010, vol.26, n.3, pp.215-224. ISSN 0186-2979.

The main purpose of this project was to study the effect of detasseling, with and without eliminating different numbers of leaves (1 to 8), on the H-49 maize hybrid (fertile and andro-sterile). A randomised complete block design with three replicates was used to evaluate 10 treatments. The variables recorded included: grain yield, plant height, ear height, weight of 200 grains and ear length, to which were applied analyses of variance and mean comparisons tests (Tukey 0.05). The results indicate that the two hybrids were statistically different with respect to yield. The H-49 AE andro-sterile type yielded 6077 kg ha-1 vs 5162 kg -1 of the fertile type, representing a 17.7 % greater yield. No statistical differences were found for the other variables. Among environments, the greatest yield was that of Santa Lucia b with 7429 kg ha-1, and the smallest production was that obtained at FESC-UNAM with a yield of 3265 kg ha-1. Detasseling positively affected grain yield in comparison with the non-detasseled control, and the effect was greater in the fertile type. Additionally, the elimination of more than three leaves (5, 6, 7 and 8 leaves) affected the yield of the grain.
