This study is a historical review of some of the terrain planning processes that have been carried out in southeastern Mexico, particularly regarding ecological land use planning (OET). Some processes that have become emblematic for planning in Mexico are identified, including the OETs of the Nichupté lagoon system, the Cancún-Tulúm corridor, Cozumel island, the Yucatán coast, the Calakmul municipality and the La Guadalupe Ejido. The actual processes of land use planning that are presently being developed or have supported other initiatives, like the Puebla Panama Plan, are also identified, together with the degree of development of each. The importance of people's participation in the terrain planning processes is stated in the second part of the study, specifying the areas of participation defined in the LGEEPA regulations regarding LUP, as well as the benefits of carrying out the OET processes following the stated regulations.
