LUNA-ORTEGA, J. Guadalupe et al. Combining ability and genetic components of inbred lines of maize. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.3, pp.243-253. ISSN 0186-2979.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the general combining ability (GCA) of 24 lines and the specific combining ability (SCA) of the obtained crosses. The study took place in two stages: 1) the formation of the crosses in the experimental field of the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro-Unidad Laguna (UAAAN-UL) and 2) the evaluation of the crosses in two localities with three environments in 2007, in the experimental field of the UAAAN-UL during the Spring and Summer, and in the communal land of El Niagara, municipality of Aguascalientes, in the Spring. The genetic material used consisted of 24 inbred lines, seven from the UAAAN-UL programme, three from the INIFAP and 14 from the CIMMYT. The crosses were evaluated in a random block experimental design with two replicates per locality. The genetic analysis followed the North Carolina mating design II of Comstock & Robinson. The results indicated that the male parents L-AN 447 (1 408 kg ha-1), CML-264 (247 Kg ha-1), and L-AN-388P (222 Kg ha-1) recovered the gratest effects of GCA, whereas for the SCA, the gratest effects were observed in the crosses L-AN360PVxCML-311 (3,456 Kg ha-1), LB-39xCML-314 (2,395 Kg ha-1) and L-AN447xCML-278 (2,270 Kg ha-1). The additive variance for yield was 0.04, exceeding the non-additive variance of 0.014. The heritability in a broad sense was 4% and in a narrow sense it was 3%, with a degree of dominance of 0.83.
