An important part of systemic, post-structuralist, and even critical approaches assumes that sociological tradition is tied to a humanist or anthropocentric principle that explains part of its contemporary theoretical deficiencies. However, can this tradition be so easily catalogued as humanist? By looking at Ludwig Gumplowicz’s work, the author delves into a forgotten pillar of the tradition that corroborates sociology’s critical roots vis-à-vis humanism. This analysis manages to deal both with the epistemic dimension and also with the disciplinary social framework in which sociology emerged. Gumplowicz’s so-called anti-humanism, the author maintains, should not only be seen as rooted in his theoretical-conceptual position, but also in his continual disciplinary struggle in the face of philosophical tradition.
