CHIMAL-SANCHEZ, Eduardo; GARCIA-SANCHEZ, Rosalva  e  HERNANDEZ-CUEVAS, Laura Verónica. Great richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi at the Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo, Mexico. Rev. Mex. Mic [online]. 2015, vol.41, pp.14-26. ISSN 0187-3180.

The Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo, Mexico, is a semi-arid ecosystem with high floristic diversity; however, the symbiotic fungi richness has been poorly studied. The aim of this work was to evaluate the arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi (AMF) species richness. Four sampling points were set: i) three in thorny scrubs and ii) one in thornless scrub. In each sampling point, soil was collected (1kg) from the rhizosphere of three plants of the five most representative species to isolate AMF spores. The species were identified using the morphological approach. Twenty-nine morpho-species of AMF were found, included in 12 genera and seven families. The 62 % of the species belonged to Glomeraceae and Gigasporaceae; whereas, the remaining 38 % were grouped into Acaulosporaceae, Ambisporaceae, Claroideoglomeraceae, Entrophosporaceae, and Pacisporaceae. This is the first time that Glomus caesaris is reported in Mexico and in the Neotropic. The Mezquital Valley has a great richness of AMF comparing with other arid regions of Mexico.
