RANGEL-CALVILLO, Martín Noé. Thyrotropin levels and their relationship with deficiency of iodine in the population of Ecatepec as a cause of congenital hypothyroidism. Perinatol. Reprod. Hum. [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.1, pp.22-26. ISSN 2524-1710.

Introduction: Iodine is required for thyroid hormone synthesis, and plays a key role in brain development and in intermediary metabolism; its deficiency produces severe developmental defects as endemic cretinism that occurs at the newborn stage. Objective: Determine thyrotropin levels and degree of iodine deficiency suffered by newborns at the Hospital General de Ecatepec. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive study was conducted during the period 2006 to 2012. We reviewed the results of all patients that were screened. Those with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)altered levels were classified: mild iodine deficiency when the TSH level was of 5 to 19.9 µg/mL; moderate iodine deficiency with levels of 20 to 39.9 µg/mL, and severe with TSH > 40 µg/mL. Results: We screened 30,830 newborns, TSH alterations were found in 147 cases, 48 male, 99 female. Mild iodine deficiency was found in 100 patients, moderate in 10 and severe in 37. Of the 147 cases, just 50 (34%) were diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
