SANTOYO, Gustavo et al. Role of siderophores in antagonic activity of Pseudomonas fluorescens ZUM80 against plant fungi. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.1, pp.53-60. ISSN 2395-8030.

The bacterial strain Pseudomonas fluorescens ZUM80 is able to inhibit the growth of diverse plant pathogens. In this work, it was reported that strain ZUM80 restricted the growth of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, Colletotrichum gloesporioides and Phytophthora cinnamomi up to 76, 72, and 70%, respectively. The high degree of inhibition was possible when the bacterial strain was inoculated 24 hours before the pathogens. A mutant of the ZUM80 Sid-, Sid strain, lacking siderophore synthesis, was unable to restrict the growth of the three plant pathogens. Additionally, a concentrate of siderophores was also able to limit the growth of C. lindemuthianum and C. gloesporioides in liquid cultures. This work shows that the ZUM80 strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens may be a viable alternative in the biocontrol of plant pathogens.
