KRIZA, Elisa. An analysis of Los símbolos transparentes as a degenerative satire on the Tlatelolco student massacre. Lit. mex [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.2, pp.85-110. ISSN 2448-8216.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex.29.2.2018.1131.

This article offers a new reading of the novel Los símbolos transparentes by Gonzalo Martré (1978), interpreting it as a satire about the Tlatelolco massacre and as a questioning of the construction of official narratives. The theoretical framework used in this analysis is that of “degenerative satire” by Steven Weisenburger (1995). The adoption of this theory about a type of satire that is postmodern, grotesque, and skeptical is based on the success this theory has had as a framework to interpret satires in different cultures. Using this theory I decipher the devastating social criticism of Martré’s novel, focusing on its complete deconstruction of official narratives –public or private– about the events of 2 October 1968 in the novel.
