HOUVENAGHEL, E. Helena. Angelina Muñiz-Huberman in dialogue with Hannah Arendt and Máximo José Kahn: identities of the Spanish-Jewish refugee in El sefardí romántico (2005). Lit. mex [online]. 2023, vol.34, n.2, pp.189-209. Epub 05-Abr-2024. ISSN 2448-8216. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex.2023.34.2/0023s01x7929.
This essay analyzes Angelina Muñiz-Huberman’s novel from the point of view of the social, ethnic and cultural marginalization suffered by Spanish exiles with Sephardic roots. As the novelist assures: “La llegada de los refugiados españoles republicanos a México tuvo sus bemoles. No fue tan alegre como se ha pretendido. Ni tan fácil ni tan aceptada por la población. Ni tan agradable ni tan benevolente”. A cultural interpretation is made of the different semantic levels that the words “exiled” and “refugee” acquire in El sefardí romántico (2005) and that highlight the transculturation process suffered by some Spanish migrants from the republican exile symbolized in the historical character Jose Kahn.
