The following paper offers a general overview on the subject of families in the Mexican judicial system. It emphasizes the interaction of three different factors: legislation, the judicial system, and culture. It underlines the necessity of recuperating diversity within families and incorporating different types of partnerships (including gays and lesbians) into the legal system. Gender inequalities also occupy a prominent role in this analysis, especially when studying divorce. Equality, in its broadest sense, is still a goal to be achieved.
