In this paper we review the forms in which black people have been represented in Mexican cinema and then analyze the film La negrada as a case study through a cultural studies’ frame as a continuum in the ways in which the representation of black and Afromexican men and women happens from a racist perspective that accounts for the manner in which alterphobic discourse in Mexico is normalized as part of everyday life, politics, academia and audiovisual-artistic production. With ethnographic and theoretical elements, the article concludes pointing which are the updates in racist and racialized discourses.
