BACKGROUND:
HELLP syndrome is a life-threatening complication of pregnancy in both mother and fetus. It manifests as a variant of the preeclampsia spectrum, almost always related to visual changes, complications, such as retinal detachment, are exceptional.
CLINICAL CASE:
A 26-year-old primigravida patient, 36 weeks pregnant, with hypertensive disorder, HELLP syndrome type, complicated by bilateral serous retinal detachment that resolved spontaneously.
CONCLUSIONS:
Ocular manifestations related to preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome are usually transient and are related more to an alarm symptom than to an organic ocular disorder. It is important that patients with these types of obstetric conditions receive multidisciplinary care.
