This paper deals with a number of facets in the life and scientific work of the illustrious Mexican chemist Leopoldo Río de la Loza. It gives an account of his contributions as teacher, researcher, and public official, including information recently found about his activity as industrialist in the field of chemistry. The data were obtained mainly from documentary primary sources.
