MECKES, Mariana; GARDUNO-RAMIREZ, María Luisa; MARQUINA, Silvia e ALVAREZ, Laura. Iridoides adicionales de la planta medicinal Astianthus viminalis y su actividad hipoglucemiante y antihiperglucemiante. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2001, vol.45, n.4, pp.195-199. ISSN 0583-7693.
Astianthus viminalis is one of the medicinal species from Morelos State, it is known as Azúchil and it is mainly used for the treatment of diabetes. The chemical study of the leaves and branches afforded, in addition to the obtained in a previous study, three iridoids: stansioside (6), plantarrenaloside (7) and campenoside (8). Hypoglycaemic and antihyperglycaemic activities of the methanolic extract and two of their main fractions were studied in normal and streptozotocin (SZ)-diabetic rats. In normal rats, none of the extracts tested exhibited hypoglycaemic activity. In SZ-diabetic rats, both fractions (AVUR and AVIR) exhibited antihyperglycaemic activity 5 h after administration at the doses of 0.15 and 0.4 g / kg respectively. These results could explain the medicinal use attributed to this plant.
