School is, undoubtedly, one of the basic institutions of society, becoming the main reference for the incorporation of individuals into society; its consideration as a key factor of social development, have made it a key tool in the life of the western population. School, like all other social institutions, has undergone a major transformation process driven by the demands of the new society. We live a historical time where is necessary to speak of a new educational context where some of the key elements of this social institution, including its functions, will be called to change. This article presents a reflection on the school situation with reference to some figures and indicators of the Spanish reality that can be extrapolated to most Western societies.
