MADERO CABIB, Cristóbal  e  MADERO CABIB, Ignacio. The Selection of Schools and Students in the Chilean School System. Who Selects Whom? The Case of Catholic Education. RMIE [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.55, pp.1267-1295. ISSN 1405-6666.

Schools' selection of students corresponds to a mechanism of inclusion and exclusion that is normally superimposed on parental expectations for selecting schools. Based on the data from the Parental Survey 2006 (n= 188.073), completed by Chile's Ministry of Education, this article describes the reasons parents mention for choosing their children's school, and the schools' criteria for selecting students. The conclusion is that Catholic schools are the most selective and usually exceed the parents' capacity of selection. One reason to select students would be the direct relation between this practice and higher average scores on the test administered by the System of Measuring Quality in Education.

Palavras-chave : selecting students; selecting schools; religious education; educational system; Chile.
