A distinctive feature of Latin America and the Caribbean's marital pattern is the high prevalence of cohabitation, especially among middle class. Historically consensual unions have not had the same social and legal status as marriages nor have same stability, but they have been culturally tolerated; furthermore, they have acted as an alternative to marriage. New theories emerged that informal unions would have to increase, although with a material and cultural substratum different from the historical one, since they would be due to reflexive decisions and fully framed in the development of the individual project. Census micro-data (rounds of 1990 and 2000) from Mexico, Panama and Chile show that consensual unions are increasing and that this tendency persists, even controlling exogenous factors.
