BARQUERA, Simón  e  TOLENTINO, Lizbeth. Geography of the nutrition-related diseases in Mexico: an epidemiological transition perspective. Pap. poblac [online]. 2005, vol.11, n.43, pp.133-148. ISSN 2448-7147.

One of the characteristics of the epidemiological and nutritional transition in Mexico is the substantial increase in the prevalence of obesity. Obesity is the most important modifiable risk factor for the development of non-communicable chronic diseases which currently represent the main public health problem in the country. These diseases do not only affect the high-income population but also, to an increasing extent, low-income groups. Furthermore, the problem affects the entire adult population, not only the elderly. In this study we used national surveys to analyze the main characteristics of the epidemiological and nutritional transition in Mexico (magnitude, distribution, determinants, associations and complications), focusing on chronic diseases associated with nutrition.

Palavras-chave : epidemiological transition; health; nutrition; chronic diseases; obesity; Mexico.
